What is an immigration psychological evaluation and how much does it cost?

If your attorney asked you for an immigration psychological evaluation, you probably have two concrete questions: what exactly it is, and how much it costs. This guide answers both.

What an immigration psychological evaluation is

It is a clinical assessment carried out by a licensed psychologist and delivered as a written, signed report to attach to an immigration filing. It is not therapy and not a quick diagnosis: it is a clinical document with a predictable structure so an attorney or officer can read it in a few minutes.

The report documents clinical findings. It does not opine on the outcome of the case and does not promise approval — that decision is legal, not clinical.

Which filings use it

  • Asylum: documents the impact of trauma and why an account may have gaps or blurred dates.
  • VAWA: documents the clinical effects of the abuse described in the self-petition.
  • U visa: documents the substantial suffering connected to the crime.
  • Extreme hardship (I-601 / I-601A): assesses the qualifying relative and the hardship they would face.
  • Visas and consular interviews: documents current emotional condition and the impact of family separation.

How the interview works

A 60 to 90 minute online session by video call, in English or Spanish. We cover your history, your family situation, the filing under way and how it is affecting you. When the account is hard to tell, we split it into two meetings with breaks. You can stop the session whenever you need to and decide how much detail you give.

What the report contains

  • Full identification of the clinician and their license number.
  • Reason for referral, tied to the specific filing.
  • Relevant history and mental status examination.
  • Standardized instruments applied (for example the PCL-5 for post-traumatic stress symptoms) with their scores.
  • Clinical interpretation and conclusion, with no legal claims.

How much an immigration psychological evaluation costs

At Portalis pricing is fixed, with no surprises:

  • Standard delivery — $850 USD: report within 30 days of the last interview.
  • Priority delivery — $999 USD: report within 15 days.

Both options include the interviews needed, the instruments applied, the signed PDF report and any wording or terminology clarifications your attorney requests within 30 days.

What about an evaluation "near me"?

The evaluation is online, so it works from any US state or from abroad, with no travel and no waiting list. The report is the same one filed after in-person evaluations.

How to schedule an appointment

Fill in the booking form with your name, email, phone, the filing type and your deadline. We reply by email or WhatsApp with available slots, usually the same business day. If your deadline is tight, we suggest priority delivery.
