Psychological evaluation for U visa cases

A U visa requires documenting the harm suffered as a crime victim, and mental harm is often the hardest to show on paper: nightmares, startle responses, fear of going out, difficulty working or parenting. A psychological evaluation describes that harm in clinical terms, with instruments applied and scores reported.

What this evaluation documents in a U visa case

The report focuses on the psychological harm linked to the crime you suffered and on how that harm persists or changes over time. It does not opine on the law-enforcement certification or on eligibility: it documents the clinical picture.

  • An account of the criminal event with the level of detail you choose to hold.
  • Current post-traumatic stress, anxiety or depressive symptoms, with their scores.
  • Impact on work, sleep, parenting, health and social life.
  • Effects of what followed: reports, statements, contact with the offender.

What the interview is like

It is a 60 to 90 minute online clinical interview with the psychologist handling your case. At the start we explain what will be asked and why, and agree on how you can ask for a break. When the account is hard to hold, it is split into two meetings.

  • You can stop the session and continue another day, at no extra cost.
  • The report does not transcribe your whole account, only what is clinically relevant.
  • You need a private space and a stable connection during the session.

Which instruments are used and why

We apply recognised scales so conclusions rest on data: the PCL-5 for post-traumatic stress symptoms and a depressive symptom inventory. Scores and their clinical interpretation appear inside the report, not as a separate list.

How your attorney uses the report

It is usually filed alongside the law-enforcement certification and your declaration, as documentation of the mental harm suffered. It helps explain delays, silences or shifts in the account from a clinical standpoint. We do not opine on the outcome of the case, which is a legal decision.

Confidentiality

Clinical notes and files stay in a private record only the assigned clinician can open. Nothing is shared with third parties without your written authorisation, and you can request a copy of your report at any time.
